Corso - Naked Raku
Naked Raku workshop by the artist David Roberts, from 19th to 23rd May 2008
PAINTING WITH SMOKE This workshop is designed for people with little or no experience of raku. In addition to having fun, during the week people will be shown how by the use of only a few simple materials and smoke a wide and beautiful range of individual surface marks, patterns and images can be developed for their ceramics. By the end of the workshop students should have acquired confidence and individuality in a variety of naked raku processes. Following an introductory illustrated talk and firing demonstration, the first couple of days will involve students making simple ceramic test forms which will be used initially to experiment with different surface treatments on the raw clay including texturing, burnishing, polishing and the use of slip.
During the remainder of the course students will be introduced to various resist/reserve processes involving the use of slips and glazes which will be used to control smoke patterns on the test pieces during their Raku firings. To help in this people will experience simple slip and glaze formulation and processing. During the workshop students will be encouraged to use drawing and visual research to inform their surface designs. Also students will be encouraged to fire and handle kilns and carbonisation processes during their own raku firings. The workshop will culminate with participants decorating and firing a larger and more individual piece to illustrate their development and choice of processes. A final question and answer session and pointers to the future will conclude the workshop.
Students will need to bring protective work clothes made from natural materials and a pair of thick, strong and heart resistant leather gloves or gauntlets. It would also help with the success of the workshop if participants could bring their own clay hand tools, sketch/note books and drawing materials. If people do possess raku tongues it would be very useful if they could be brought as well. David Roberts Web Site: www.davidroberts-ceramics.com/splash
